As part of the diploma seminar in Všeradice, the second year of the student competition in application prototyping on a given topic took place - Hackathon Všeradice 2017.

Minister of Agriculture Marian Jurečka took over the patronage of the event. The entire event (Graduate Seminar and Hackathon) was held with the support of Concur, which donated valuable prizes. Other prizes were provided by the Faculty of Operational Economics of the CZU in Prague, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, the Department of Information Technologies and other partners of the event. PEF ČZU in Prague also rewarded the winning teams with an extraordinary scholarship.
A total of 5 teams participated in the competition, creating prototypes of mobile applications for agriculture. There were two specific tasks to choose from, from which the teams could choose the one closest to them, or develop them further:
  1. Using a mobile application for an overview of a smart farm and its management
  2. Game to popularize agriculture, countryside or food industry
More information about prototyping and the nature of the competition can be found in separate article. The topic was announced at the launch. All teams immediately started analyzing and designing their applications. They changed their mind about the topic, divided the work and started developing their prototypes. The task was to create not only the application design itself, but also usage scenarios and present everything at the end of the event. The final presentation was evaluated by an expert committee consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, representatives of Concur, the organizers, the head of the Department of Information Technologies and the dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics. The students themselves took part in the evaluation - members of individual teams who could evaluate the work of their colleagues. Students from abroad who attend the English Informatics course also participated. Their presentation took place in English. Despite a certain language barrier, they eventually turned their participation into a great success and their prototype was rated the best.

And what ideas were created as part of the Hackathon?

Most teams chose the first assignment offered. Some students had interesting ideas and solutions, while others had more elaborate prototypes. It was evaluated in several categories, which included the presentation itself, the prototype as well as the overall idea and usage scenario. The winning team was able to combine both an elaborate prototype and a good idea and description of the solution.

5th - 4th place: Team DROP TABLE

Ingredients: George the Fourteenth, Adam Rojdl The main idea is the anonymous sharing of collected data about farms in a central database, the possibility of their processing and evaluation. The application displays all data and analyzes clearly in one place. Based on all the data provided, it can show recommendations for further steps for maximum farmer efficiency, a global increase in yields, or support for beginning farmers.

5th - 4th place: Team GreatSolution

Ingredients: Andrey Berest, Roman Boklah The prototype shows the use of spectral analysis for improving soil properties and assessing crop condition. The solution brings a number of benefits for farmers – for example, in the form of improving the quality of farming, optimizing production, saving time and increasing income.

3rd Place: The AppVenture Team

Ingredients: Jakub Štěpán Novák, Petr Kejda The focus of the prototype is primarily on the smart vineyard. It displays outputs from sensors, analysis, weather, etc. The resulting prototype shows an application that gives an overall overview with the possibility of wide customization, according to the needs of the user.

2nd Place: The Lorem Ipsum Team

Ingredients: Vojtěch Dušek, Jan Kanta Country Challenge is a game that aims to get people back to the countryside and promote agriculture and regions in general. It works on the principle of challenge. The game prompts the user to complete the selected task from the menu within the time limit during which it must be filmed. For example, he will have to spread manure on a selected farm. Whoever completes the challenge the fastest wins.

1st place: Team Matrix

Ingredients: Quan Tung Duong, Nzube Victor Okoye The application is used for remote management of all smart farm devices. It uses land data, data from various IoT sensors, precision agriculture, map visualization and provides everything in a simple form as information support for decision-making and management. We thank all the participants of the event and look forward to next year!
