About the project

The CODECS project will develop user-friendly approaches, methods and tools together with farmers and AKIS stakeholders to document the co-benefits and costs of technologies applied in real-world contexts. This will improve the collective ability to understand, evaluate and predict the full range of benefits and costs of farm digitalization and build digital ecosystems that maximize the net benefits of digitalization.

CODECS develops a vision of “sustainable digitalization” that will contribute to a multi-level transition that connects social, economic and ecological aspects, by adopting an innovative actor-centered system-based approach and action research methodologies based on the coordination of 21 Living Labs through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams. The research studies the role of “digital ecosystems” in the adoption rate of digital technologies and in the distribution of their costs and benefits; it develops and tests three indicators (farmer digital readiness, readiness to scale, digital ecosystem benefits) to monitor the level of digitalization and anticipate its potential costs and benefits. It assesses and compares the full range of social, economic and environmental costs and benefits of digitalization of agricultural holdings, identifying synergies and trade-offs between different sources of costs and benefits. It also tests and demonstrates digital technologies in 21 Living Labs through physical and virtual demonstrations. The CODECS platform includes search, demonstration and evaluation tools. The CODECS project has a strong commitment to achieving positive impact in the AKIS domain and in the policy area, which will be put into practice through a dedicated work package on policy analysis, policy tools and a policy information set, as well as webinars. It is also developing a strategy for engagement at local, national and European levels through Living Labs, the Science-Policy Interface, the AKIS network and the demo-farm network.
