Another key output of the GRANULAR project is the data set "Accessibility Indicators to services at EU scale – aggregated indicators", which is based on a detailed travel matrix at the 1 km level, but simplifies its interpretation through spatial aggregation. While the basic grid data contains hundreds of millions of travel time estimates, the aggregated indicators summarize these values in a clearer form that is suitable for working at a regional, national or European level.
Aggregation is done according to administrative units (e.g. NUTS2, NUTS3, LAU) or other spatial units, and thus allows easy comparison of service availability between regions. This makes the data more accessible not only to experts in the field of spatial analysis, but also to policy makers and other users who need a quick and understandable overview.
The calculation methodology remains transparent and repeatable, using the open routing engine OSRM and input data from OpenStreetMap. The result is a set of indicators that captures spatial differences in the availability of services across Europe and shows how rural and urban areas differ in terms of travel times.
Visualization is available via granular-gridviz where users can interactively view aggregation results and compare regional values. Indicators aggregated in this way represent an important tool for identifying areas with impaired service availability, which is key for targeted planning and development strategies.
GRANULAR Digital Platform (platform.ruralgranular.eu) is an online environment focused on the visualization and analysis of data on rural areas of Europe. It enables access to a wide range of indicators and data sets that support research and political decision-making based on high-quality and open data. The platform offers an interactive Data Viewer, where individual indicators can be examined at different spatial scales and compared with each other.
